BL Dramas that Broke Stereotypes

      In the BL Dramas world like any other industry, there are many stereotypes made by people, not just for  lgbtq+ community but for many things. If people made stereotypes weren’t enough, during the sensation wave of BLs, Many BL and Non-BL contents (i.e. Movies, series, novels, manga,.etc.) gave a further push to them.But if we see many BLs broke the stereotypes so we are gonna detail a few of them and how they broke the stereotypes and showed the reality of the community and life.

1. Bad buddy Series – 

      Bad Buddy the series is a funny-romantic lgbtq+  Thai series based on a famous novel. It was released in 2021 featuring Nanon korapat and Ohm pawat.Nanon korapat as ‘Pran’ a guy with a small passion for singing which his family was not happy with.Ohm pawat as ‘Pat’ Who was supposed to be the enemy of his classmate ‘Pran’ but things ended up being different until Pran was sent away by his mother.The story continues for these boys who were not allowed to be friends to those who can’t be just friends. It also won the award for the best lqbtq+ series in Asia.

       Along the Fun story of “Enemies to lovers.” It also broke the stereotype of “Top and bottoms” Although we see many BLs giving a push to this. Bad buddy the series clearly broke the stereotype. Apart from that It also broke the ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ stereotypes about Homosexual couples. It also shows how the wrong decisions of adults ruin the life of a kid. 

     It was one of the series which tried to normalize different sexualities as Pat is believed to be a pansexual in the series which was admired due to Lgbtq+ series showing less perspective on the topic. “Adults are not always right” Pran (Bad buddy)

2. The Effect – 

         The effect is not actually the BL series aired in 2019 which was the first genre as “Romance” but was later removed. It still is tagged as Yaoi due to a side story. It features James prapatthorn playing the role of a shy introverted boy Shin.It showed the non-fairytale side of people’s lives. It follows a powerful storyline of Rape and suicide.
        In the first episode, many mistook it as a sweet love story between an introverted student Shin and his popular senior. Which I believe to be shown from a perspective of a victim. The public made a stereotype that “You will sense danger, It is their fault they didn’t decide to run away” which many victims have to hear.
       It was a psychological series about how our words and actions affect others. It also showed the reality of the Victim’s case and Victim blaming.
       The unhealthy attraction never ends up as a sweet healthy fairytale, It ends quite opposite.
 

3. History 4 Close to you – 

       History 4 close to you is Part of a Taiwanese series HIStory. It was released in 2021 and features anchon sen, Micheal an, Charles tu, and wico len. 
 
       Besides the fact History fans waited so long for this series, it got pretty controversial due to the Offensive personal opinions of Viewers.The series follows the life of 4 young men, struggling through friendships, families, and love. The character of Xinsi was a man insecure about his sexuality growing up. The whole series is filled with ups and downs of Relations. The series made some facts clear about Homosexual relationships like Constant position culture which is honestly explained clearly in rare content.
 
      It also broke the stereotype of “Top” and “bottom” Which is not even slightly true actually. The story shows the actual things Homosexual people have to go through because of Assumptions and stereotypes.

4. Gaya sa pelikula (like in the movies.) – 

       Gaya sa Pelikula is a 2020 romantic-comedy drama Filipino BL web series that was a prequel to an unreleased Wattpad telecast. It’s a bitter-sweet story of “accidental” roommates. It features Ian Pangilinan as ‘Karl’ Who worked part-time as a writer Besides being an architect student, He always had a dream to become a Film writer which he was never able to work on due to his parents. Paolo Pangilinan is a Media arts student who had to struggle through things because of his sexuality and his homophobic broken family. We can never appreciate enough the series enough for making it so realistically connected and relatable to viewers by showing, We all have imperfections, We all have made mistakes. We will heal and learn.

        Another extremely believed stereotype about relationships is “Love will always be perfect”. Love is not perfect, Love is making mistakes together and learning. Love is excepting the imperfections, scars, and even failures of each other. It also did a great job showing the lives of actual People struggling with sexualities.
 

5.  2gether the Series – 

      Together the series, A thai series released in 2020, Features Bright vachirawit as a popular guitarist ‘Sarawat’ and Win Metawin as a cheerful student ‘Tine’ who pretends to be with the popular guitarist to get rid of an unwanted admirer. The story follows the life events of two students who crossed each other’s path.
 
      There are many stereotypes about Lgbtq+, one of them is being heavily sexual and BLs only be trending due to NC adult scenes.  It had a Slow love realistic story. However, we can see the characters playing around and teasing each other which may or may not be mistaken for explication, But the main thing that is the series showed love that didn’t have lust which is showed rarely. It was one of the series which was a sensation without any explicit content.

    I believe that most of the BLs are made for straight people but series like “Gayasapelikula” “I Told Sunset about you” “Papa and Daddy” are made for queer people. These series literally portrayed the struggles of coming out, self validation, struggle of gay parents and many more aspects. While watching them I feel like I am watching a documentary. Everything seems so natural and real. These are my forever favorite series.

      I also like love “Bad buddy” “2gether” and “The Eclipse” “Not Me”. These series have romantically portrayed different issues of society. I have always preferred less NC scenes type BLs. Right amount of romance in right place (for eg. “Bad buddy”)is enough to make a series good. So these are literally my kind of BLs.

    I loved this article seriously. There’s many series who has proved the stereotypes made by people are not accurate always. Writer and producer needs to think much more than only stories full of ncs and lust. These stories might be liked by wide range of fans but we really can’t say it a LGBTQ series if it doesn’t show the struggle of two guy or girl who are in love with each other bcs their life are not as much easy as they shows.
