Hello, My name is Vikas. Back in 2020 when the lockdown just started, there was a lot of streaming app like Netflix, amazon prime, and disney+hotstar coming up to cope with excessive free time for me but Wattpad was the main app that I go to again and again why? Because of the number of queer content, I found there. For a closet gay guy, it is difficult to stream queer content from the family account, so one account on Wattpad on my mother’s smartphone wasn’t a big deal.
Just a few weeks through lockdown I completed my Wattpad reading list and for another week I reread the one I liked the most and told my friend about it. She was surprised how I completed my reading list in just a few weeks, she was addicted to kdramas just as I was to web novels. So one day she told me about one drama which was just aired on “wetv” and its title was “My Engineer”, she told me that it has malexmale leads so yes I got curious about it. I got hooked on this drama soon I realized it’s not kdrama(throughout the series I was thinking it was kdrama). After completing the drama I got a recommendation for the series “Addicted” which I differ from that it is Chinese and it got discontinued by their govt. That’s how it all started in lockdown and how I got to know that queer content exists in a greater amount just in my neighboring countries.
Somehow I read a blog regarding BLs and which one is good (was it an Instagram post?! I don’t know) so I searched for “Sotus” on Netflix the thumbnail was good, it was 11 in the night when I started, and episode by episode I watched and didn’t knew when it was 5 in the morning. I got hooked on the story and tried to search for the second season but it wasn’t available on Netflix. It was disappointing that both seasons already aired but were not available on Netflix. I wasn’t aware that this series is available on youtube. The very next day I started watching other BLs as well the one which gave me 2 weeks of the break was “until we meet again”, I got so emotional on the first episode ( i think we all have been there ). For the whole 2 weeks I spent on fanmade mv of this series, somewhere in between I started adding the OSTs to my playlist on Spotify because it just feels right.
You know when you do something that you love you won’t get an idea how much time you spent just doing that!! So during my BL marathon, I got much indulged that I started using their curse words which I guess every BL fan can understand. While BL gave me much better insight into the world outside the four walls of my home I grew confident in my sexuality. That’s when I started to post BL content on my IG stories and was surprised that I didn’t get much criticism on this considered taboo topic. BLs changed my point of view of the outside world. The lockdown was lifted a while ago, my university classes were online so I had unlimited time to binge-watch BLs.
While these BLs don’t talk about the issue of the LGBTQ+ community much but their contribution to making gay couples nothing just pure love is something that should be praised by our community. Yes, at some point it just gives a plot like it is made for a hetronormative society ( like using wifey-husband titles, a top-bottom concept with masculine and feminine perspectives) this sometimes makes the queer consumer of these BLs much uncomfortable. If you watch BLs that were produced and aired before 2020 this thing exists there much but nowadays fresh bl content is coming up with a different approach for the gay couple, series like “bad buddy”, “like in the movies”, “HIStory 4 close to you”, which deals with these stereotypes that exist.
